Glenlivet whisky can be considered a legacy in the world of scotch whiskeys. The Glenlivet distillery is one of the oldest distilleries in the Glenlivet parish. This distillery was established early in 1824 and has been in operation since. Even during the times of the Great Depression this distillery never stopped its operations. It was only during World War II that the distillery remained closed for some time.
Established by distiller George Smith, this brand of Scottish whisky continues to grow from strength to strength. Post the war the Glenlivet distillery became one of the largest single malt distilleries in the world so that they could keep pace with the global demand of this superior brand. Today the Glenlivet brand is the largest selling single malt in the United States and ranks second as the highest selling single malt globally.
The Glenlivet distillery is owned by Pernod Richards which is a French alcoholic beverage company. This company oversees the annual production of 5,900,000 proof liters of the distillery’s production. Six million bottles of the Glenlivet single malt whisky is made from the majority of this production. The remainder is used by the company to make the other blended whiskeys.
Glenlivet whisky still uses the fundamental elements of copper stills, spring water and oak casks in its whisky making process. Just like these elements have stayed unchanged so have the skills used to make this scotch. This distillery’s draws the water used in the whisky from Josie’s Well and similar other springs which are located in close proximity to the distillery.
They source the barley used in making the scotch from Crisp Maltings in Portgordon. In order to produce a light and flavorful spirit, the stills at the Glenlivet distillery are shaped like a lantern and have long and narrow necks. Once the spirits have been distilled they are left to mature in oak casks. The casks used to mature Glenlivet whisky were formerly oak casks that were used to mature bourbon.
The Glenlivet distillery falls in the category of the Speyside distillery. Speyside distillery’s are located in northeastern Scotland in the area around Morey and Strathspey. The range of Glenlivet whisky is made up of twelve years, fifteen years, sixteen years, eighteen, twenty one and twenty five years. They also have a special range of limited edition collection called the Cellar Collection. They also cater to the duty free market for travel retail. However this range is slightly different from the regular range.
While the main product from the Glenlivet distillery is the Glenlivet single malt whisky, the whisky produced from this distillery is also used in the making Pernod Richards premium brands such as brands namely Royal Salute Whisky and Chivas Regal.
The Glenlivet whisky has a very distinct flavor and unique taste. They give special emphasis on maintain the color body and palette of their whiskeys. Colors range from light pale or gold to amber to dark amber. The sixteen year nadurra has a unique color of pale gold and light lemony tones. Their consistence has been such that they have been the recipient of many awards and accolades over the years.
